SHOM George

Description

Biographical informationShom George was born on the 17th October 1877 in Canton, China. He migrated to Western Australia in January 1894 per SS Saladin.

He was related to Hem Ben Yem. He may have had three brothers: Hem Ben Yem, Ah Wing (4) and Wong Ah Yem who all worked for Ah Ling.

He was the husband of Zena Elizabeth Flynn and father of: 1) Josephine Deborah (born 1916, BDM 101390/1916) and 2) George Benjamin (born 1919, BDM 100694/1919).

In 1916 he stated that he had managed Ah Ling & Co., 127 Barrack Street, Perth for 19 years - suggesting that he started managing Ah Ling & Co around 1897. In 1920 he was still managing the store when he employed Ah Young (7) to assist him.

From 1903 to about 1918 he lived at 815 Hay Street, Perth and he may also have traded from these premises. In 1919, he was living at 100 Park Street, Subiaco with his wife and children (West Australian, 22 March 1919, p. 1). He owned property in Perth.
