WONG AH YEM

Biographical informationWong Ah Yem was born in December 1888 in Hong Moon [Jiangmen], China. He migrated to Western Australia in 1902. He was five feet six inches in height. He may have been a brother of Hem Ben Yem, George Shom and Ah Wing (4).

He worked as a carter for Ah Ling at Burswood in 1916. In 1919 he became a driver for Ah Ling's shop, 127 Barrack Street, Perth.

In 1915 he was living in Charles Street and working as a market gardener when he was assaulted by Chen Dooey at a gambling house in James Street. The altercation was retaliation for what Chen Dooey considered an attempt to have him arrested the day before for purchasing liquor. Three other men were also charged for being involved in the altercation - Chen Dang, Chen Foo and Chen Ah Kee.
