Biographical informationJohn William Chong was born in 1890 in Rushworth, Victoria, Australia. He was the son of Chong Woon and Emma Branson.
He married Charlotte Alice McGregor in November 1910 at Castlemain, Victoria, and they had at least five children:
1) John (Jack) William McGregor Chong (b. 1911 Rushworth, Victoria, d. 1937 Youanmi, Western Australia);
2) Gertrude Victoria Chong (b. 1912 Bunbury, Western Australia, d. 1997 Geraldton, Western Australia);
3) James Calvin Chong (b. 1916 Echuca, Victoria, d. 1980 Gold Coast, Queensland);
4) Florence Elizabeth May Chong (aka Que) (b. 1917 Narrandera, New South Wales, d. 1995, Parramatta, New South Wales);
5) William Henry Chong (aka Que) (b. 1919 Narraburra, New South Wales, d. 1986 Sydney, New South Wales).
It appears that he was only in Western Australia for a short time from October 1911 to October 1913. Donald Chong travelled with him, and wife and mother visited them for a few months in late 1912. They then all returned to Rushworth, Victoria. He divorced Charlotte some time in the 1920s and then returned Western Australia and lived and worked in Meekatharra.
