In 1902 he and his brothers, Alfred and Ernest, were arrested for assaulting Ah Wah. The court case found that Ah Wah and at least four other Chinese men had been trying to kill Frederick Washing for evicting them from a house on the corner of King and Murray Street in Perth. This house had previously been used as a Chinese gambling house. The Washing Brothers had bought the property and the alleged assault occurred when Frederick was trying to forcefully evict the former tenants.
Frederick Washing regularly acted as interpreter in Perth magistrate cases where Chinese interpretation was needed. He could speak Chinese, but not read it (West Australian 1 September 1905 pg 2).
