Biographical informationAmy Fong Sam was born in Broome on 6 September 1923 (BDM 1100015/1913). She was the daughter of Fong Sam and Gracie Fong Sam.
Amy's mother, Gracie, applied for a CEDT in 1927, intending to travel with daughters Amy, Ellen and baby May, but did not use it.
Amy travelled overseas in April 1936 with her father, mother and siblings. While her father returned in November 1936 and the rest of her family returned in October 1937, Amy's certificate was extended to April 1946.
In response to a request from the Customs and Excise Office for an extension to Amy's CEDT, Fong Sam responded that it was, 'not possible for his daughter to return to Australia under present China war conditions'. (NAA digitised file to support Amy's CEDT, E601, I1951/37, Item ID 3354139.)
