Biographical informationFong Sam was born January 1878 in Canton, China. He migrated to Australia in 1880 and moved to Western Australia in May 1897. He was just over five feet three inches in height.
He married Gracie Ah Leong in Broome in 1923 (BDM 1100004/1923). They had at least five children: Amy, born 1923; and Ellen, born 1925; May, born 1926; Percy, born 1929; and Mary, born 1932.
He worked as a shop keeper at Broome from at least 1911 to 1948.
He travelled overseas six times: September 1906 to July 1908; October 1911 to November 1912; January 1916 to January 1917; January 1920 to May 1921; and June to October 1933.
Fong Sam travelled overseas with his wife and five children in April 1936 but returned alone in November 1936. His wife and children (minus eldest daughter Amy who may have stayed in China until 1946) returned in October 1937.
He left Western Australia in June 1948 and sought two extensions to his Certificate of Exemption but did not return. He died at Kowloon in 1957.
