Biographical informationGock Ming Harry was born in August 1911 in Hong Kong. He was British by nationality. He migrated to Western Australia in 1912. He was the son of William and Mabel Gock Ming.
He was educated at St Brigid's Convent, West Perth.
When assessing his application for a CEDT, the Collector of Customs noted that when Harry arrived in Sydney in December 1912 with his mother, 'it would appear that the fact of the baby being a half caste Chinese escaped notice." (NAA, PP4/2, 1936/451, Item ID: 4317455, p. 107)
He travelled overseas with his family in March 1925.
Harry went to China to study. With his CEDT due to expire in 1927, he sought an extension on the basis that he had not completed his studies in China. Harry again extended his CEDT in 1930.
He returned in January 1936 per SS Taiping to Sydney, where two of his sisters (Edna and Mavis) were residing.
The Gock Ming family is featured in Mavis Gock Yen's book, "South Flows the Pearl: Chinese Australian Voices".Date of birth8th August 1911Date of death2002
