DescriptionThe Shanghai Café was located at 167 William Street (‘just over the Horseshoe Bridge’).

An advertisement when the café opened in November 1924 described it as, ‘the most up-to-date Oriental Restaurant in the State’ serving, ‘well-known dishes such as Long Soup, Short Soup, Chop Suey, and numerous other dishes will be served at all hours.
The décor was described as, ‘ fitted in a very elaborately modern style, to ensure comfort of our patrons’ and encouraged readers to, ‘come, try and see how you like these delicious dishes’. (West Australian, 21 November 1924, p. 1).

Prior to 1926 it had operated based on a partnership between Peter Tom Yingman, Choong Kim, Choong Leong, Ah Yee Lep Man, Chung Han Powwing, and Adeline Elsie Shem. It was acquired by Ah Kwong & Co. in 1926.

Notice is hereby given that that the partnership hitherto existing between Peter Tom Yingman, Choong Kim, Choong Leong, Ah Yee Lep Man, Chung Han Powwing, and Adeline Elsie Shem, who carried on business at the corner of Roe and William Sts, Perth under the name style or firm of “The Shanghai Café” has been dissolved as from the 1st day of March, 1926.
The business of “The Shanghai Café” has been acquired by the firm of “Ah Kwong and Co.” who will conduct the same on their own account under the same name, at the same address.
