AH LEONG SING

Description

Biographical informationAh Leong Sing (aka Leong Yen) was born in about 1881 in Canton, China [news reports in 1925 claimed he was much younger, but this seems unlikely]. He migrated to Western Australia in 1896. He was five feet eight and a quarter in height.

He worked as a shop assistant and laundryman at Sing Kee's Laundry, 16 South Terrace, Fremantle, in 1924 when he applied for a CEDT. Ah Leong Sing's application was not successful (D).

He married Ruby Lee Wood on 18 June 1924 and lived with the Lee Wood family at 11 Tiverton Street after his marriage. George Way acted as matchmaker. He used to occasionally visit the family laundry before his marriage. In January 1925, he went to Fremantle to live. While there he worked at Chin Hop and Co's fruit and vegetable shop. On June 23 1925 he bought a fruit shop at 163 Hay Street, Subiaco.

On 13 July 1925 Ruby went missing. Her body was found 10 days later in the Swan River. Ah Leong Sing, then using the name Leong Yen, was arrested for her murder but found guilty of manslaughter.
