Biographical informationAlbert Shem (aka See Fun) was the son of Quan Ah Sam and his wife Jan or Lind. He was born in Melbourne in about 1895 (BDM 1895/5297).
In 1898 he travelled to China with the family and lived in Canton for a couple of years. The family then moved to Macao in Hong Kong and stayed there until 1906. In about 1907 he, his father, sister Suey Lind and brother See Chong Harold travelled to Melbourne and then Perth, leaving his mother, sister Suey Land and brother See Kong behind in China. He stayed with them in Perth and went to school at Scotch College in Claremont.
He was a fruit and vegetable merchant, and a partner in Ah Sam and Co, 112 Barrack Street, Perth (E) before 1919.
He travelled to Hong Kong in 1919 to undertake a medical course, where he subsequently worked as a doctor. In 1929 he commenced practice at 108 Beaufort Street, Perth.
