It was owned by Wang Ah Key and described as 'Greengrocers and Fruiterers'.
The shop must have been supplied with produce from nearby gardens. It appears that W. Ah Key & Co. had market gardens in Suburban Rd, South Perth. In 1915, the entire infrastructure at Suburban Rd was put up for tender, probably arising from bankruptcy:
"TENDERS.
ASSIGNED ESTATE OF AH KEY (trading as W. Ah Key and Co.), of
Suburban-road, South Perth Market Gardener.
TENDERS are invited, and wil be received by the undersigned up to noon on Monday,
March 15, 1915, for the undermentioned ASSETS in the above Assigned Estate.
The business is offered as a going concern. Alternative tenders are, however,
invited for the following:
LOT 1.-Plant, consisting of Horse and Cart. Pumping Engine and Piping, Garden Implements, including Plough, Harrows, and Shovels.
LOT 2.-Iron Safe, "Invincible."
LOT 3.--Growing Vegetables and Chinese Goods.
LOT 4.--Book Debts.
The gardens are well and favourably known, and should be highly profitable if
well looked after.
The highest or any tender not necessarily accepted. Full particulars on application to
the undersigned. '
