Biographical informationWong Dick Samuel was born in about 1868 in Canton, China. He migrated to Victoria, Australia in 1883 and moved to Western Australia in 1895. He was five feet seven inches in height.
In 1901 he was a member of W. Ah Key & Co. He worked as a merchant for Wong Kow Key, 165 William Street, Perth and had a one quarter share valued at £500 in 1902. He also shared the lease of a market garden in South Perth in 1904 (A).
In 1901 Samuel applied for naturalisation, stating that he was a member of the Presbyterian Church and could read and write English "with some degree of fluency." His request was refused on the grounds that "naturalisation is not granted to Asiatic aliens."
In 1902, Samuel travelled to China for a two year period, leaving his wife and one child (age 14) in Perth. His travel documents suggest he had been in Australia for 18 years (source: National Archives, A1, 1903/6440).Other nameWong Dick (Samuel) (differentiated name)Date of birth1868
