DescriptionAn Importer and Grocery business established by Charles Hing (2). It operated from 132-134 James Street.
During the 1920s (?) it moved to 124 James Street. It was during this time that Choong Kim took over managing the shop.
When applying to employ Yeon Wan Fart in 1947, it was noted that “Mr Kim has been in this business in Perth for over thirty years, and the pre-war days annual turnover was averagely about £3,000, the turnover for the year ended 30th June 1946 was about £1,500.”
Hop Hing & Co. was more than just a shop. It became a central point for the Chinese community over many decades. It also operated as a post office, meeting place, money exchange etc for the Chinese community. Several recollections from various people in oral history interviews (such as Doug Sue) emphasise the central focus of Hop Hing within the Chinese community.
N.B. There was a Hop Hing market garden in Sawyers Valley but it has not been determined if it is connected to Hop Hing & Co. AddressJames Street,NorthbridgeLocation[1]
