Biographical informationYuen Mary Selena (née Brewer), also known as Mary Hoy Poy, was born in 1886 in Sale, Victoria (BDM Victoria). She was the fourth of six children of Henry Brewer and Elizabeth Garrett. She married Yuen Hoy Poy in 1910 (BDM 1910/43 Perth).
She was mother of 7 children:
1) Doreen Sadie Hoy Poy, born 1910 in Perth;
2) Elvie May Hoy Poy, born 1912 in Perth;
3) Clyde Eric Arnold Hoy Poy, born 1913 in West Perth;
4) Renie Avis Hoy Poy, born 1915 in Perth;
5) Bruce Henry Arnold Hoy Poy, born 1916 in Nedlands;
6) Royce Edwin Arnold Hoy Poy, born 1920 in Nedlands;
7) Max Neville Arthur Hoy Poy, born 1924 in Subiaco (died at the age of 7 weeks).
The family lived in The Avenue, Nedlands, in 1916. They moved to Wellington Street, Perth, in 1923 and then to 18 Park Street, Perth.
She travelled overseas in 1933. She returned to Perth in 1934 and lived at North Perth.
During WWII she lived at 18 Claverton St, North Perth. Her husband had returned to China in 1936 but after Japanese occupation of his village during WWII, Mary did not receive any communications from her husband. She was dependant on the support of her sons Clyde and Royce who both enlisted. Her daughters were in Hong Kong when WWII broke out and her other son, Bruce, was believed to have been captured by the Japanese. Royce as guarantor for costs associated with bringing Sadie home to Australia during WWII (NAA Security file, ID 780258 and 1382249).
