FONG Arthur

Biographical informationFONG, Arthur (aka Arthur Ling Tack) was born in 1908 in Canton, China. He was the son of LOUEY Ling Tack and TACK Ethel Victoria May. He grew up in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He migrated to Western Australia in 1918 with Irene Fong on an educational permit. On 2 December 1925 permission was granted for Irene and Arthur to remain in Australia after their schooling had finished.

He lived at Broome with his parents, Louey Ling Tack and Tack Ethel. In 1920 he moved to Perth and schooled at the Christian Brothers College in Victoria Avenue, Perth and then Stott's Business College.

He worked in Louey Ling Tack's businesses. He travelled overseas from February 1927 to March 1931 (after seeking an extension for his Certificate of Exemption which were only valid for a 3-year period). When he returned he took over all Louey Ling Tack's businesses when his father left to live in Hong Kong.

In 1937 he married Pearl Ng Chong Fong (b.1917) in Broome (BDM 1937/1100006). They had their first child, Douglas in August 1938 but had to evacuate to Perth during World War 2. He applied for a CEDT to travel to China in 1939 but he did not use it. Victor, Arthur’s 2nd child, was born in Perth in 1944.

Arthur and the family relocated to Broome in 1947, built their business up again and had a daughter, Mary Joy, in 1948. He bought the premises previously owned by his father, 12 Carnarvon Street, Broome, and opened a general store there. It traded under the name L.L. Tack. Arthur only was granted Australian citizenship on 26th January 1962 in Broome.
