Biographical informationAh Poy was born in about 1884 in Canton, China. He migrated to Western Australia in 1902 per 'Minilya', with his father Chu Chee, and brother Quock How. He was five feet and five inches in height.
He worked as an assistant in Wing War Kee's shop, Market Street, Fremantle, 1902-1904, as a market gardener on War Sang's (Wah Sang's?) market garden at Balcatta between 1904 and 1906 and Wing Shing's market garden at Bibra Lake from 1906 to 1908.
He was an assistant in Chou On's shop, Alexander Road, Fremantle in 1908-1909 and worked as a street hawker from 1909 to 1911. In 1914 he was recorded as a shopkeeper at the corner of Suffolk Street and South Terrace, Fremantle and, in 1916, in Chou On's shop, 6 Alexander Road, Fremantle. Between 1918 and 1926, he was a greengrocer living in Swan Street, North Fremantle.
In 1931, he was working at 19 Bannister Street, Fremantle. He returned to market gardening in ?1935 and was recorded as working in Swan Street, North Fremantle in 1947.
Ah Poy travelled overseas five times: March to September 1907; June 1914 to November 1915; May 1920 to September 1921; May 1926 to January 1928; and April 1932 to October 1935.
During his overseas visits to China, Ah Poy married and had three children. His wife and children remained in China. In 1914 it was reported that Ah Poy refused to support his father, Chu Chee, who was a confirmed opium smoker and gambler.
