DescriptionWilliam Edward Marmion (1845-1896) was a merchant and politician. He was the son of Patrick Marmion (1815-1856), merchant, and his wife Charlotte Stone.
He worked in the mercantile service and at 21 he started his own business at Fremantle: W. E. Marmion & Co. Over the next twenty years he expanded his interests in pastoral, pearling and maritime activities. He owned a station in the Kimberleys, jointly leased millions of acres of pastoral land, and conducted large shipping operations. Following the discovery of gold in the Yilgarn, he formed mining companies and helped to fit out prospecting parties. On 28 December 1870 married Anna Mary Gibbons in Fremantle and together they had three sons and six daughters.
