Biographical informationChiu A Leng (周亞凌) was born in about 1863 in Tong Kun, China (東莞縣). She migrated to Western Australia in 1899.
She worked under contract to work as a nurse for Margaret Cameron, Broome, for S$20 per month for one year (C). Margaret Cameron's husband, A. Cameron, was the Superintendent of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company. He applied for permission for his wife to bring a Chinese nurse with her when she travelled from Singapore back to Broome in mid-1899. Permission was granted and Chiu A Leng, arrived by the SS Saladin in July 1899. The expectation was clear that the Cameron's would return Chiu A Leng to Singapore at the end of her contract (around one year).
