Biographical informationBorn c.1842. Ah Ying William migrated to Western Australia in 1877.
From 1877 to 1887, Ah Ying lived in Carnarvon and Mandurah. He moved to Perth in 1887 and worked as a market gardener in Murray Street, West Perth.
He married Eleanor Jane Smith (nee Palmer) in 1892 (BDM 266/1892). Eleanor was a widow with a young son.
He applied for naturalisation on 3 December 1894. His petition was supported by seven men attesting that he was a 'sober, industrious and respectable man his character being such as to warrant his being a naturalised British subject'. His application was not approved (C). A note written in pencil on his application read that the government, 'do not see their way to grant his request'. In 1893 and 1894 he was listed in the Post Office Directories as living in Murray Street, between Melbourne Rd and George St. In 1895 and 1897 he was listed as a market gardener in Murray Street.
From 1904 through to 1910 he was listed in the Post Office Directories as 'William Ying' and living in Kadina Street, North Perth. From 1911 onwards, the Kadina Street address was noted as 'Mrs William Ying'.
Died in Perth Public Hospital on 27 March 1909 (West Australian, 2 April 1909, p. 1 and BDM WA 100177/1909). At the time of his death he was described as a greengrocer and lived in North Perth.
