In March 1884, he commenced working for Reuben Edwards as a gardener at £1 a fortnight.
In July 1884, Ah On was charged with forging and uttering before the Supreme Court and sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour. In September 1884, he wrote a letter to the Governor seeking a remission of the sentence.
