- provide a clear definition of what constitutes offensive content as it relates to material on UWA Collected
- outline the means for feedback from users of the site who come across potentially offensive material
- support the administrators of UWA Collected in:
- safeguarding the reputation of the University while upholding the University’s commitment to freedom of speech and academic freedom, as outlined in the UWA Code for the Protection of Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom
- maintaining the historical, research and preservation value of materials contributed.
This guideline applies to the UWA Collected site and all material on the site. It also applies to all those involved in the administration of the site, those contributors with items on the site, and those using or viewing the material on the site in any capacity.
Offensive content
UWA Collected may contain material with offensive content. Offensive content includes, but is not limited to, discriminatory language, stereotypes, and depictions related to race, gender, gender identity, national origin, sexuality, religion and disability, as well as profanity or controversial topics and opinions.
Material may contain or express objectionable positions, norms and values which represent the opinions and actions of their creators at the time the material was created. These may constitute historical evidence which forms part of the collections’ significance.
By providing access to material with offensive content, UWA does not endorse any of the beliefs, attitudes or behaviours expressed therein.
Approach
We do not intend to remove or redact images or words from material based solely on the possibility that they may be considered offensive, or on request from a user.
Upon request, removal or redaction of material considered offensive may be actioned in cases where there is a relationship between the material and the individual requesting removal or redaction (such as that they authored the material or appear in the image in question).
We will exercise takedown powers to remove unlawful material in accordance with the University Information Protection policy, conferring with UWA Information Governance where required.
