DescriptionThe MV Charon II was built by the Caledon Ship Building & Engineering Co. of Dundee, Scotland. It was a 3.7 ton oil powered motor ship, 320 feet in length, max speed 12 knots. It was a sister ship to the MV Gorgon.
It was initially owned jointly by the West Australian Steam Navigation Company Ltd. and The Ocean Steamship Co. Ltd, but became fully owned by The Ocean Steamship Co. Ltd within a few months of first operation.
It was launched in August 1936 to replace the SS Minderoo which grounded in 1935. It travelled regularly between Fremantle and Singapore. It carried both passengers and cargo.
On 29 Mar 1940 it was requisitioned for Government service. During 1943 it acted as supply ship to the Australian base at Milne Bay. It also carried many Chinese WW2 evacuees from Singapore to Australia.
