Biographical informationSarib Thomas was born in Java, Indonesia in 1864. In 1880 he left due to an abusive father and migrated to Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. He changed his name to Sarib.
He worked in the pearling industry on luggers and was involved in coastal shipping. Sarib Street in Darwin is named after him.
He married: 1) Marian Wu whose family operated the Oriental Cafe in Cavenagh Street, Darwin.
Sometime before 1917 he married: 2) Chong Wee Alice and they had at least six children:
1) Daisy Sarib (b. 5/7/1917 Darwin, d. 21/9/1063 Alice Springs), married 1/12/1939 Les Ruthven;
2) Anne Sarib (b. 1921 Darwin, d. 9/12/2001 Darwin), married Allen Masters (b. 1921 Darwin, d. 18/9/2001 Darwin);
3) Mona Sarib (b. 1/1/1924 Darwin, d. 8/4/1992) married 1939 William Wing Sang Tong Lee (b. 1920, d. 1979 Darwin);
4) Norma Sarib - worked as a waitress at the Victoria Hotel before Darwin was evacuated;
5) George Richard Sarib (b. 19/7/1928 Darwin, d. 21/10/2010);
6) Joseph Gung Tsang Sarib (b. 6/10/1930 Darwin, d. 21/10/2010), married Marian Ng Sik Choy Wu (b. 6/10/1930, d. 2/7/2016).
