Paul Schramm

Description

Biographical informationLeo Paul Schramm was a pianist, music teacher and composer active in the early 20th century.

Born in Vienna, Austria, he began musical studies at the age of four and made his first public appearance as a piano soloist, composer and conductor at eight. Paul and wife Diny formed a successful piano duo which performed in concert and on radio in the 1920s and 30s. They settled in Wellington, New Zealand in 1938 after touring Australasia they year prior. However, Paul left for Australia in 1946 after his application for naturalisation in New Zealand was turned down.

In 1948 he he toured Western Australia for the Adult Education Board, taking his Bechstein upright piano. He gave successful concerts in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, and broadcast a regular radio programme "Presenting Paul Schramm" on 2GB.

In 1953, after a series of financial setbacks through bad investments, and suspecting that a degenerative condition was affecting his playing, he intended to put music behind him. He died later that year Other nameLeo Paul SchrammDate of birth22nd September 1892Date of death30th November 1953
