Biographical informationShem Adeline Elsie (née Pon) was born in about 1897 in Melbourne, Victoria. She was Chinese by nationality.

She married Harold Shem and they had three daughters, all born in Perth: Gladys (b. 1916), Winifred (b. 1919) and Norma (b. 1924).

She travelled overseas with her husband and youngest daughter Norma between July and November 1927.
