Joined Royal Navy in 1813 as a midshipman. Promoted to Lieutenant. He was engaged in surveys of North Australia 1818-1821. Captain 1873. Surveyor General WA 1829-1870 & MLC in official capacity. He explored 1830 Avon Valley, 1836 east to Lake Brown. 1848-9 east of Esperance. Visited South Australia 1.11.1855 per Vivid with wife & daughter. To England 1.1861 & returned 2.1862 per Robert Morrison. Member Linnean Society. Foundation member Swan River Mechanics' Institute & President 1856. Director WA Bank; Vice Pres. Weld Club 1876. JP. Employed 20 T/L men on occasions 1851-1874 inc1uding 2 gardeners. Commemorated in 1979 in a brass plaque in Perth pavement for year 1830.
