Sam Lee Laundry, Perth

Description

DescriptionThe Sam Lee Laundry was originally described as being located opposite the Daily News building (129 St George's Terrace) in the 1890s. It was still there in 1900 (P.O. Directory). In March 1911, it moved to 193 St George's Terrace, opposite King St (West Australian, 3 March 1911, p. 3).

Likely to have operated from c.1893 until at least the 1920s. May have moved as the building opposite the Daily News office was scheduled for demolition in 1911.

In January 1893 it was advertised as a "first class laundry from New York." In April that year a practical joker attached a 'Smallpox' yellow streamer used by the Health Department to the window of the laundry despite their being no evidence of the disease at the premises (West Australian, 8 April 1893, p. 1).

Lee Pain (also known as Sam Lee) may be the person who established the laundry. Certainly he was a partner in the laundry from before 1905 until October 1920. He was assisted from the beginning by Lee Wah (2) who became a partner in the firm before 1905 and remained a partner until at least 1921. Lee Woo Charlie was also a partner form 1897 to at least 1921.

Lee Hong (4) was a partner in the firm from at least 1902 onwards.
