1731 C1 MISC-001 (Ngomakurira i)

Description

DescriptionPeter Garlake, in his 1987 book, The Painted Caves, described the site as follows: "The paintings are not in a cave but at the foot of a high, vertical cliff face and thus fully exposed to the weather. The outlines of a line of four very large elephants, 3m to 4m across, form the basis of the main panel. They are among the finest such paintings. In front of the second elephant is a group of women with aprons; lines emerge from some of their chests. On the
head of the third elephant from the left, a fight is painted. The 40 man being overpowered spreads hands and fingers in alarm. There is an antbear on the elephant's forehead.

On the ear of the right-hand elephant is a scene with two seated women, surrounded by roots and bags, one of them pounding a root against a stone. Two children are asleep beside them, their hands on their faces. Two hunters stand under trees above them. There is a more complex camp scene just right of the elephant. At least six couples are represented. Their bags are suspended from poles, tied to uprights, beside them. On the dewlap of this elephant are seven animals, probably young, rather graceless and with disproportionately large heads. One is pierced by arrows.

On the projecting curve of the cliff face, above the highest point of the boulders beneath the paintings, there is a group of at least 16 figures, most of whom are women, wearing tassels and aprons, holding tubes or musical instruments to their faces. Many are crouched and have hair on end. This unusual scene seems to represent a dance. There are two gatherers above them.

In a shallow overhang, down the slope of the rock to the left of these paintings, are two obese male figures. One is very large and holds rattles in his raised hands. The smaller, on the left, has a rattle on one shoulder. To the left are four running hunters with shoulder bags and plumed headdresses. There is a hare between them, an unusual subject.

To the right is a camp scene; further right, beneath a kudu cow, seven small, unidentifiable creatures appear to enter a semi-circular design. 4m away to the right are paintings of a rhino and feline.
