Callaway International Resource Centre for Music and Music Education (CIRCME)

DescriptionThe Callaway International Resource Centre for Music and Music Education (CIRCME) was based in the School of Music at The University of Western Australia. It was supported by the Frank Callaway Foundation for Music and collaborated with the International Society for Music Education (ISME), the Australian Society for Music Education (ASME), the Australian Music Centre (AMC) and other professional bodies in many countries. The Centre was a non-commercial and co-operative organisation which promoted study and research for the advancement of music and music education, both within Australia and overseas. Its internationally significant archival holdings, now held by the Callaway Centre, form a comprehensive resource which was available to music educators and musicologists from around the world. CIRCME also published texts in the areas of music education and musicology, many of which would otherwise not be commercially viable.Corporate historyThe foundations of the Callaway International Resource Centre for Music and Music Education (CIRCME) date back to 1984 when Sir Frank Callaway, Foundation Professor of the School of Music and Head and internationally regarded music educator and musician, donated his professional library and personal papers upon his retirement from the University. The Frank Callaway Foundation was established to raise funds and generate interest and engagement in the establishment of a music archives and research repository in which his and other donations could be housed and made available for research. In 1989 CIRCME was officially launched and opened as a non-commercial and co-operative organisation to promote study and research for the advancement of music and music education, both within Australia and overseas. Frank Callaway remained committed to the growth and development of the Centre until his death in 2003.

As well as managing the vast number of collections and research inquiries, CIRCME organised events including the annual Callaway Lecture from 1988-2001 (now run by the Conservatorium of Music), the Percy Grainger Lecture and conferences such as the John Blacking Symposium (2003). For many years CIRCME also included a publishing arm for quality academic books on music and music education. It established an impressive international network of music educators and key institutions, and published more than 50 titles, either under its own imprint or that of its specially created music publishing house, Matilda Music Press. Many of these titles were published in association with peak bodies such as the International Society for Music Education (ISME) and the Australian Society for Music Education (ASME) thereby expanding its international network and capacity to publish quality materials at non-commercial prices. This in turn facilitated further research and community outreach and engagement.

In 2004 CIRCME was renamed the Callaway Centre when it moved to its new home at the historic Park Avenue Building. Although the publications arm of the Centre was divested, the publications are still proving valuable resources in music education, musicology and performance and copyright royalties help to support the operations of the Callaway Centre.
