Biographical informationThe Most Rev. C.O.L Riley OBE, VD, MA, DD, Hon.LLD, was born in Birmingham, England, in 1854, and was educated at Owens College, Manchester, and Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1878, M.A. in 1881. In 1894 he was appointed Anglican Bishop of Perth, becoming Archbishop in 1914, a position which he filled until his death in 1929.
Riley became prominently associated with the move to establish a University in Western Australia and was appointed Vice-Chairman of the 1909 Royal Commission. Elected first Warden of Convocation in 1913, his work helped to give that body its early prominence. He was a member of Senate for 15 years from 1914 and Chancellor from 1916 to 1922. His final years were concerned preparations for the establishment of St. Georges College from the proceeds of the Hackett bequest to the Anglican Church. Riley was awarded the OBE in 1920 and the honorary degree LLD in 1922.
