Biographical informationTan Niap Tong (陳業統) was born in about 1861 in Bun Sio (Hallam) [Hainan Island], China (文昌縣). He migrated to Western Australia in February 1889.
He was recruited in Singapore to work as a 'boy' under contract to the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, Broome, for three years at S$25 per month.
