Biographical informationTan A Chion was born in about 1840 in Liong Khe, China. He migrated to Western Australia in February 1885.
He was a street sweeper in Singapore when he was recruited to work under contract to Stevenson and Lorenzen, location unrecorded [but likely to be Springs Station, south of Roebourne], for three years at S$8 per month.
Tan A Chion confirmed he lied about his age upon engagement, reducing it from 43 to 36 upon the advice of his agent. On arrival he was locked up as he appeared to be insane.
