Biographical informationSam Sue (aka Fong Sam Sue, aka Poon Sam) gives two different birth dates on his paperwork. When using the name Sam Sue he states that he was born on the 12th May 1880. When using the name Kuang Sen Sui he gives the birth day of 12th March 1881. He was born in Canton, China. He also give two different migration dates: March 1896 for Sam Sue and 1900 for Kuang Sen Sui. But, this is certainly one person and all his papers are in a single immigration file where the date discrepancies are noted. He was about five feet five inches in height.
He was the son of Fong Tak Foo (father) and Chin Hwo (mother, also stated Gee Foo and Chin See). He married, Yee See (b. 1899), during a trip to China in 1917. She joined him for a short time in Broome after their wedding and then returned to China and living in Shanghai. She died in China in 1956. He had a son, Joseph Kuang (b. 1905, aka Fong Kou Ching) who was living in the USA in 1960, and a daughter-in-law and grandchildren in Hong Kong in 1960.
He worked in Broome from 1900 to 1904. He then moved to Geraldton and managed his own store there from 1904 to 1906 (A). He then moved back to Broome in 1906 and opened another store in Carnarvon Street, as a grocer and general merchant, where he cleaned and sold pearls and pearl shells. He remained there at least until 1942 (B). He spend a two years in Geraldton, then three years in Perth before returning to Broome in 1947.
Sam Sue travelled overseas three time: October 1904 to November 1905; and March to October 1917; February 1926 to June 1927. He took out three CEDTs, in 1919, 1929 and 1958, but did not use any of them (D).
He was fined £25 in November 1920 for the unlawful possession of a pearl. In May 1952 he was fined £20 for supplying liquor to a "native".
