Biographical informationLem Chung (aka Lamb, Charles) was born in about 1859 in Wong Kung, Quantong, China. He went to America as a child and worked as a missionary to overseas Chinese for 8 years before returning to China for two years. Whilst he was in China, Fong Lang wrote to him requesting that he migrate to Western Australia and manage the Wing On Woo Company in Geraldton. He migrated to Western Australia in June 1892.
Lem Chung was assistant manager of the firm when he applied for naturalisation in 1894. After his application was refused he requested permission on 9 July 1895 for his wife, son and a female servant living in Canton to join him in Western Australia. The Colonial Secretary's Office replied that 'the Government has no power to grant request'.
