He was recruited in Singapore in 1884 to work under contract to John Pierce Wellard, Turner River, Roebourne, for three years.
On his arrival at Cossack, Lan A Seng assaulted another Chinese and was found to be insane. He was sentenced to 14 days imprisonment with hard labour, however, he refused to work with other prisoners.
