Biographical informationHi Lory was born in about 1858 in Singapore. He migrated to Western Australia in 1880. He was five feet zero inches in height. He left his wife and children in Singapore.
He worked as a market gardener at Bunbury from 1880 to 1883 when he moved to a Perth market garden and stayed there for ten years. In 1893 he leased a market garden at South Fremantle.
He was included in a list of defaulting ratepayers in September 1900 implying he was leasing land from G. Dixon at this time (Umpire, 15 September 1900, p. 4). In 1902 he was charged with being in a paddock belonging to Robert Dixon 'for an unlawful purpose'. (Evening Courier, 21 October 1902, p. 3.)
He travelled overseas between June 1903 and April 1904. On his return he leased land with several other Chinese gardeners at Bibra Lake. He remained there until the 1930s when he is believed to have moved to York.
