Biographical informationHan Meng Soon was born in about 1855 in Hailam [Hainan Island], China. He migrated to Western Australia in June 1881.
He was recruited in Singapore to work as a shepherd under contract to Donald MacPherson, Glentromie Station, Victoria Plains, for three years for £2 per month.
In 1882, Han Ming Soon absconded from service, claiming that he was dissatisfied with working conditions. He was sentenced to serve a period of imprisonment but was released before this term had expired when it was found, that no contract could be produced binding him to McPherson's service.
