FONG JOE

Description

Biographical informationFong Joe was born in September 1879 in Sun Ning, China. He migrated to Western Australia in 1891. He was five feet five and a half inches in height. He was a nephew of Fong Lang.

He worked as a draper in the Wing on Woo Store, Geraldton, from 1891 (C). In his application for a certificate to return to the colony in 1898, it was noted that he "speaks good English and writes English fairly well" and was a "respectable member of society and a desirable immigrant". (SRO, 1898/0295

He moved to become a shop keeper in Napier Street, Broome, from at least 1910 to 1947. He was recorded as a pearl dealer in 1933 and 'retired' in 1947 (E).

Travelled overseas five times: in 1898; January 1911 to August 1913; January 1918 to August 1922; February 1928 to November 1929; and March 1933 to June 1939. He applied for a CEDT in 1947 but did not use it (D).Other nameFong Joe (differentiated name)Joseph FONGDate of birthSeptember 1879
