Biographical informationFong Joe was born in September 1879 in Sun Ning, China. He migrated to Western Australia in 1891. He was five feet five and a half inches in height. He was a nephew of Fong Lang.
He worked as a draper in the Wing on Woo Store, Geraldton, from 1891 (C). In his application for a certificate to return to the colony in 1898, it was noted that he "speaks good English and writes English fairly well" and was a "respectable member of society and a desirable immigrant". He moved to become a shop keeper in Napier Street, Broome, from at least 1910 to 1947. He was recorded as a pearl dealer in 1933 and 'retired' in 1947 (E).
