Biographical informationChiong Jiong Tan migrated to Western Australia in March 1879 per 'Janet'.
He worked as a cook under contract for W. D. Moore at the Fish Curing Establishment, Mandurah, for S$6 per month for 12 months. He was sent to the Perth Gaol in 1880 for refusing to cook. He was released from gaol in April 1880 but had no means of returning to Mandurah as he was destitute. Leong A Jian committed the same offence and found himself in the same situation.
In 1885, Chiong Jiong Tan was employed by the Commissioner for Crown Lands when he requested to be repatriated to Singapore. Approval was given.
