Biographical informationChew Lai was born in about 1860 in China (exact location unspecified). He migrated to Western Australia in 1896. He was five feet and six inches in height.

He worked in partnership with Ah Ton (1) in the Lee Goon Laundry, 229 Aberdeen Street, Perth, from at least 1908 until 1916 when he became the sole owner (F).
