Biographical informationAh Tan was born in about 1867 in Canton, China. He migrated to Western Australia in 1885. He was five feet five and a quarter inches in height.

He worked as a cook at Perth before travelling overseas in February 1902. He returned to Western Australia in November 1902 (A). He then worked as a polisher for J. W.
