At the time of his death he was working on a market garden in South Perth and living there with ten other Chinese men. The market garden supplied vegetables to a greengrocer shop in William Street, Perth, owned by a Chinese man. After a post-mortem had linked his death to bubonic plague his body was removed to Woodman Point quarantine station and incinerated. All close contacts were quarantined. A Perth doctor disagreed with the plague diagnosis and stated that Ah Sam had died of syncope.
