Hugh Hamersley of Lockridge Estate in Guildford wrote Ah Sam a reference in 1900 and it is likely that Ah Sam had been working for him as a gardener from 1897-1900. He worked as a market gardener at Guildford in 1909 (E). He then worked on a market garden in Charles Street, North Perth, in 1916 (B).
