Biographical informationAh Hi was born in about 1863 in Canton, China. He migrated to Western Australia in the early to mid 1880s. He was five feet eight inches in height.
He was a vegetable trader in Fremantle in 1889 (West Australian 14/08/1889, pg 3) and he bought some of his produce from market gardens in South Perth.
In 1893 he placed an order for the importation of twenty-one Chinese market gardeners, however, when they arrived, he failed to claim them. It was stated that he was not in Western Australia at this time. They were sent back to Singapore in June 1893 per the SS Australind (Western Mail 10/06/1893, pg 12). Shortly after this incident the regulations around the importation of Chinese labour were significantly tightened.
