Biographical informationEmeritus Professor Hubert Edwin Whitfeld, CBE, BA, BE, MIEAust, was born in Sydney on 14 March 1875. Educated at Sydney Grammar School and the University of Sydney (in Classics and Philosophy) he taught for two years before taking a degree in Engineering.
He worked as a metallurgist and mine manager in the Murchison before being appointed as Foundation Professor of Mining and Engineering at UWA.
He was part-time Vice-Chancellor 1913-15 and 1925-27 and was appointed as the inaugural permanent Vice-Chancellor, a position he held from 1927 until his death in 1939.
Whitfeld Court in front of Winthrop Hall is named in his honour.
