Smalley Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (1984-85) arranged for two pianos by Adam Pinto

Commissioned by the BBC for European Music Year (1985) the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra was premiered by Smalley himself with the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra on 11th September 1985. Smalley’s recording made with the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra in 1987 was the first Australian submission to be awarded the UNSECO International Rostrum of Composers top award, that of ‘recommended work’. The concerto’s unbroken 26-minute span contains the vestiges of four movements - an opening ‘allegro’, a scherzo with two trios, a slow movement in two halves and a ‘finale’ which is a rousing moto perpetuo. These various sections are, however, only different ways of looking at the same basic material, and this unity is emphasised by the fact that there are continual cross- references between the sections. This includes a reprise of first movement material in the final moto perpetuo.

Wishing to avoid a simplistic opposition between soloist and orchestra, Smalley considered the piano in relation to other solo instruments, to families of instruments and to the orchestral tutti. This instrumental conception results in each section of the orchestra having a part of considerable virtuosity, which made the concerto highly suitable for an arrangement for two pianos. The arrangement was made in 2017 as part of the process of preparing and performing the concerto with the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra on the 13th of September, conducted by James Ledger. It is hoped that, with this two-piano score now available through the Australian Music Centre, preparing future performances will be a simpler affair.
