Transformation I: for piano and live electronic modulation

Description

DescriptionThis performance was given as part of a recital series featuring the solo piano music of Roger Smalley AM (1943–2015) curated by Adam Pinto, with guest artist Christopher Tonkin. Transformation was influenced by the work of Karlheinz Stockhausen, with whom Smalley collaborated, and was composed during a period of prolific output, intense creative development, and extensive international touring which ended with the composer’s 1976 immigration to Australia. The work marks the intersection of music/technology and composition/improvisation that characterized the approach of the performance group ‘Intermodulation’ (Peter Britton, Andrew Powell, Smalley, Tim Souster, Robin Thompson).

Live-electronics and Moment Form are both primary features of Transformation. Smalley used ring modulation to extend the tonal possibilities and colour of the instrument; the first instance of the technique with piano, preceding Stockhausen’s Mantra. Four layers of musical material are combined in various forms throughout the eight sections that comprise the work’s palindromic structure. A gradual build in intensity is briefly interrupted in Section 5, with long static moments of unmodulated decaying piano resonance before the intensity of the work gradually builds again to a turbulent climax. The work comes to rest with bell-like sonorities that toll the work’s ending. Despite the significance of Transformation in Smalley’s corpus, the score remained incomplete and unpublished since 1971 when Smalley and Souster last performed the work.
