Biographical informationChen Gin was born in about 1861. He was five feet and eight inches in height.
He leased a shop at Fremantle before travelling overseas in June 1902. A much younger looking man (likely to be his son) returned via Melbourne in October 1904 per the Eastern. The photos had been changed on the CoD form. The young man was subjected to a Dictation Test which he failed. He was therefore rejected and sent back to China on the vessel on which he had arrived (A).
The real Chen Gin must have returned at some time after this because in February 1911 he was charged with falsifying immigration papers (G). The changed photographs were presented as evidence. The outcome of the enquiry is not known.
